This valve is only open in one direction and thus serves as a non-return valve: It prevents water from running into the pump and damaging it if it does not run at all - be it because of a power failure, a defect or simply because you only run the pump overnight, for example. This also prevents the aquarium from running dry via the air hose and keeps your bottom dry.
