Depending on the requirements of the aquarium's inhabitants, the parameters of the aquarium should be set or adjusted accordingly. Our Test Set I, which measures the pH, GH, KH and nitrite values using a reliable drop test and easy-to-read color chart, provides information on this.
The drop test measures these values:
pH value
Maintaining a suitable pH value as constantly as possible is an important prerequisite for the well-being of all aquatic organisms. Above all, sudden fluctuations should be avoided at all costs. In addition, many substances dissolved in water are subject to changes dependent on the pH value. For example, the amount of CO2 that can be dissolved in the water is directly related to the pH value.
Total hardness GH
Due to the origin of the water, it may contain varying amounts of mineral salts that influence the total hardness. By definition, this is the total concentration of all alkaline earth ions in the water. It is largely determined by calcium and magnesium salts.
Carbonate hardness KH
The carbonate hardness provides information about the level of hydrogen carbonate dissolved in the water. Together with carbonates and carbon dioxide (CO2), these form an important buffer system that prevents dangerously high pH fluctuations in the water.
Nitrite NO2
Nitrite, like ammonia, is highly toxic to fish and should therefore be avoided in the aquarium. Nitrite accumulates in the aquarium mainly through the decomposition of organic substances such as food residues or fish excretions, especially in aquariums heavily populated with fish. Drugs in particular can interfere with the sensitive interaction of the beneficial bacteria and cause the nitrite value to rise.
