Chlorine is highly toxic to aquarium inhabitants because it damages the gills. Chlorine in the water can even severely affect the plants in the aquarium and in extreme cases cause them to die.

In the hot summer months, bacteria can build up in drinking water, and in the event of local pollution, storms or the occurrence of legionella and other organic problems, waterworks are happy to use chlorine to disinfect tap water.

Chlorine used in this way is harmless to humans, but it is lethally toxic to fish and especially shrimp, as well as to crayfish or snails in the aquarium.
